PYTHON & ARCGIS

Overview

My latest projects in self-education and development have been dedicated to learning Python, Java Script, HTML and CSS languages. This website is not the only product of those efforts. I have also combined my previously acquired skills in ArcGIS and QGIS with Python to create visualized Covid-19 prediction models. This aims to show my proficiency in Arc, as well as my abilities to work with the system and encode useful programs to enhance the product value.

ArcGIS and QGIS

During my time at Denison, I took an ArcGIS course that allowed me to become proficient with the program. ArcGIS is a data visualization tool specifically geared towards working with geographic information. The program has the capability to work with large datasets in conjunction with locational raster files and other geographic data to present resourceful visuals. Throughout the year, I created a portfolio of maps that combined concrete data from sources such as the US census, and combined such data with geographic information to visualize a specific topic.

The map examples shown here use this data combination to hone in on specific points that I found to be important to my statistical analysis. For example, I used 2018 US census data to visualize both racial and residential statistics in Washington DC to emphasize the existence of racial segregation while pointing out the economic extremes that accompany the wealthiest and poorest locations in our nation’s capital.

Throughout my exploration of Arc and Q, I acquired a handful of valuable tools, useful for both ArcGIS and other projects beyond the program. Some of these tools include working with large datasets, understanding raster files and digital elevation models, and combining it all to make a readable product that isn’t overwhelmed by needless information.

To see these maps, and others in greater detail, please enjoy my full portfolio.

Python

The latest addition to my skill-repertoire is coding. In the past six months, I have learned to code with python, receiving certificates from the Python Institute Essentials course (PCEP-30-02), and the CIMDB Coursera’s Data Analysis with Python courses. In addition to practicing with online coding programs, taking classes and writing HTML and CSS code for this website, I have also combined my newest skills with ArcGIS.

Ohio_pop

This most recent project combines ArcGIS Insights with Python coding to create visualizations of Covid-19 trends across British Columbia, Canada. By scripting CHIME prediction models into the system, I analyze and display the predicted viral trends of Covid-19 in 2023. Click here to see the full project:

CONSULTING & RED FRAME LAB

Overview

During my time at Denison University, I was heavily involved with the entrepreneurship and Design thinking center known as the Red Frame Lab. This unique program strives to encourage students to think outside normalized methods of problem solving and supports young entrepreneurs to reach their future goals. I worked extensively not only as a part of the lab’s staff, but also as a participant in several of their programs including Red Frame Consulting and the Remix Conference.

Red Frame Consulting

I participated in multiple semester-long consulting projects which connected our teams with companies around the Columbus, Ohio area as our clients. My teams met with assigned companies to collect data, create donor profiles, construct development funding models and provide a final analysis on the company’s future based on their needs.

Partnerships:

Buzzsaw
Charitable Healthcare Network was searching for a sustainable funding plan that highlighted the importance of funding from big donors and lobbied government aid. My team worked to construct a 5-year development funding plan and donor profiles for the client to support their existing systems of funding while conducting easy outreach based on their current funding base. In addition, my team assisted in a deep exploration of CHN's foundational company identity due to their multifacited services, in order to market themselves with precision.

Buzzsaw
Buzzsaw Brewing Company came to my team searching for a multifacited result. Firstly, they were interested in opening a restraunt location, as their beer had been successfully selling in retail stores, and they were ready to expand themselves in this way. Further, they wanted to impliment a unique but interesting loyalty program to ensure returning costumers. Finally, they asked for client profiles and ways to reach out to potential clientell in their twenties. My team delivered advice for their restraunt location in ways of design suggestions to plannable event schedules. We then created several interesting loyalty program options for the client to chose from. Finally, we polled over-age college students about their interest in premium beer consumption, and what would motivate them to attend such a restraunt, and provided client profiles based on that research.

Red Frame Lab

For four consecutive years, I worked on the Red Frame Lab’s staff as a communications assistant, where I designed visual advertisements and conducted outreach on behalf of the lab. Some of my work included animated advertisements, newsletter updates, social media posts, student interviews and interior design projects.

Projects:

RFL_advertisement One of my main responsibilities was to conduct community outreach by designing and implementing innovative forms of advertisement throughout campus. Above displays several examples of the experimental forms of advertisement that I implimented across campus. This includes an animated video ad (bottom left) that ran in Denison's common areas.

I was often tasked with smaller design projects such as creating professional profile cards for students who were participating in special Red Frame Lab programs, in an effort to promote the programs and draw in more students. RFL_graphics

Towards the end of my employment at the lab, I began writing for the newly launched Red Frame Lab newsletter, in addition to creating a podcast that featured students who have benefited from the lab’s resources.

PODCASTING & RADIO

Overview

Throughout college, I developed a strong interest in journalism, and quickly took to sound editing, radio and podcasting. While participating in alternative forms of journalism on campus, most of my time was spent sharing stories from behind a microphone. Here are some examples of what I created at the height of my journey in audio journalism.

Radio

Beginning my freshman year, I joined the on-air community early and with purpose. While many of my peers took their two hours of air time to play interesting musical playlists, I chose a different route. I pitched a talk show that would interview Denison students on topics that they felt passionate about and/or could relate to, such as race, gender, sexuality, and politics. Not only did I aim to hear their stories but to share their perspective on how those objectively controversial topics played into and compared with the opinions of the larger American population.

That semester, I launched my show “It’s Complicated.”

The show’s purpose was not only to make student’s voices heard in ways beyond their opinions on everyday campus gossip. I wanted to expose listeners to how students’ viewpoints on objectively controversial topics played into the larger picture of American society. In the age of expanding polarization after the political and social shifts of 2016, I felt it important to share the wide variety of opinions that exist on campus to emphasize the diversity of thought that exists in tandem with an attempt to create understanding across opposing viewpoints.

Through the process of being on-air, I acquired a wide variety of skills in radio journalism, ranging from effective voice presentation to live sound editing on the fly. I created a recorded intro, booked student interviews, prepared talking points and later finalized the recorded versions of the show into podcast form.

Please enjoy a couple of my favorite episodes:

Podcasting

As part of a self-run, Denison funded, internship during the summer of 2020 I interviewed students on their experiences with Covid-19, and how they were handling the immense change.

The podcast called “the Covid Accounts,” aimed to collect first hand accounts of students during a monumental time, not only for archival purposes, but to aid the school in possible methods of supporting students.

Here is one episode featuring students who were members of the national POSSE scholarship program:

La Parte Política de Migración

The politics around migration is widespread and complicated. From the economic effects to societal expectations of migrants, this investigative essay uses multiple documentaries and external sources to analyze the political connotations behind such a large phenomenon.

Video Presentations

Throughout my university years, I began creating short animated presentation videos to add depth to my oral presentations. By combining hand drawn animation with self-recorded voice overs, I offered a dynamic and engaging way of presenting my research. Below are a few examples of those presentation videos in both English (left) and Spanish (right).
